Pontefract Report

20 golfers turned out to play for this years Keeble Cup at Pontefract & District G.C. and as always the welcome was second to none from the club. The course was in pretty good condition with the greens running a little slow in some peoples opinions. The weather wasn’t bad either and after the early rain cleared the day turned into a warm one especially when the sun came out to play!

The day started with the usual bacon sandwich followed by 18 holes of Stableford golf. We didn’t have to be far off the fairway before being shin deep in the rough surroundings proving a tough time for some. For those who kept it on the short stuff though, the rewards were there to be had which is reflected in some great scores.

Onto the Prizes starting with nearest pins….

Lee Weatherill took both the 3rd hole & the 14th hole with Mike Pottock winning the 7th hole. Kev Harper wasn’t to be left out and he took the final par 3, 17th.

The captains prize for nearest in 2 was won by the captain himself who redistributed his prize to the last place player. This was taken by Wayne Jackson meaning his day wasn’t a total disaster!!

2 players entered the 2’s club and shared the pot, well done to Tom Mchale & to Mark Mabbett.

The top 3 were as follows…..In 3rd with very respectable 35 points was Nigel Owram, 2nd with a great score of 37 was Lee Weatherill & the winner of the 2023 Keeble Cup was Nick McEvoy with a stunning 41 points.

Naturally all 3 lost shots from their handicaps as did 1 or 2 others with 5 players regaining 1 shot. All Scores and handicaps can be seen on the relevant handicap page.

Our next outing is Richmond on Monday 5th June and the payment window is now open as the fixture is just 2 weeks on Monday. I have booked for 24 and its possible we will fall short so can I ask people to confirm asap if the wish to attend so I can alter then numbers if required. The cost for the day is £45 plus £5 sweep. It is a great value full day with 27 holes and 3 meals including, breakfast sandwich, lunch and dinner. There is no special dress code for dinner in the evening. I will confirm the menu on my return from my holiday next Friday.

 

 

Ilkley

A warm & friendly welcome awaited us at Ilkley G.C. on Thursday 23rd March, however the weather gods didn’t get the sunshine memo so provided us with shower after shower with one particular downpour that made conditions pretty tough for the closing holes. The course was in pretty good condition considering all the rain of recent times together with the fact that greens had been worked on in preparation for the upcoming season.

After the usual bacon sandwich, 19 hardy golfers took to the course in the picturesque surroundings of the Wharfedale valley to tackle a pleasant, flat course with the River Wharfe meandering through several holes. Target golf was the order of the first few holes with three par 3’s in the first 5 holes. These together with 2 par 3’s on the back 9 saw a total of 6 players paying a visit to the 2’s ‘club’ which appeared to have an open day, letting so many in!! Entrants included Pete Ferris, Alan Ashbee, Luke Wirrolow, Nigel Owram & James Pickersgill who felt it was so good in the club he visited twice!! Nearest the pins on those par 3’s were won by Nigel  Owram, James Hardy (2), James Pickersgill & Luke Wirrolow.

The Captains prize for nearest in 2 was on the 10th hole & was won by James Pickersgill.

To the top 3 places……… Alan Ashbee was 3rd with 34 points beaten on a count back by Richard Teale who finished in second. The winner with very respectable score 35 points, a great score in the conditions, was Lee Worth.

After the golf we were treated to soup and sandwiches which went down well to help warm us up and dry us out in the clubhouse. A special thanks to Ilkley Golf Club who provided us with a super value, great day out. I will seek feedback as to whether we return next March.

Well done to all who won a prize.

Our next outing will be a visit to Selby G.C. on Friday 21st April meeting at 1030 for the traditional bacon sandwich with tea or coffee followed by a round of golf from 1130. All details are on the events section of this website.

 

 

 

 

 

2023 Season

So here we are at the beginning of 2023 with the new season peeping over the horizon. I can confirm all futures (bar Richmond) have been organised and I will update the events section of the website over the next few days.

There are couple of changes which were agreed at the AGM meeting back in September. The main one being a trial to move away from cash and to pay by bank transfer AT LEAST 5 days prior to the fixture. Bank details will be emailed out in February.

The other change this season, is to our handicap system. Players will be still deducted 1 or 2 shots dependant on score above the buffer zone (stableford), however scores below the buffer zone will only see an addition of 1 shot. There will also be reset at the end of this season with members handicaps restored to their WHS Index.

 

AGM Trophy Report

A slightly disappointing turnout of just 13 turned out for the AGM Trophy at Shipley Northcliffe. After discussions with several members it appears the problem could be that the location is hard to get to because of the rush hour. It is proposed we hold the AGM trophy at Low Laithes or similar, a course which is easier to get to without the need for travelling across a city centre.

Thanks to the club for their hospitality. The course was presented superbly despite the dry weather of recent weeks. We played a warm up 9 holes in the morning before the AGM at lunchtime. The sunny afternoon saw us play the full 18 holes for the trophy.

It has to be mentioned (sorry Nick) that despite an unbelievable score of 25 for the 9 holes, Nick McEvoy peaked too soon and scored just 26 in the afternoon 18 hole competition.

John Goundry sadly retired injured. Hope all is well John and your back to full fitness soon.

The PAR 3 nearest the pins were won by John Kay – hole 4, Nick McEvoy on holes 8 & 18 and Ian Dyson won on the 12th. Ian also took the captains prize, nearest in 2, on hole 1.

The 2’s club was visited by Aidy Hope and Pete Ferris.

As there was only 13 players, it meant the we could only pay out for the first 2 places. In second place with a score of 35 was Alan Ashbee losing out narrowly on a count back to the winner of the 2022 AGM Trophy which was Aidy Hope.

Well done to all who won on the day.

This draws the 2022 season to a close and I want to thank everyone for their support and attendance through the season. I’m already looking forward to 2023 and will get on arranging the fixtures shortly.

 

 

 

 

 

Captains Day Report

WOW……

A fantastic 33 players showed up to support Mr. Captain, Dave Colley on his day at Hillsborough Golf Club.

First of all, on behalf of all the players, I would like to thank all the staff at Hillsborough Golf Club for their amazing welcome & hospitality given to us throughout the day. We were invited back after a challenging visit 18 months ago after the course suffered a tough wet winter with the greens almost unplayable. It has to be said that it showed its full potential yesterday, a super course…. Possibly as tough starting 3 holes as we have ever encountered so far on any visit over the years with amazing greens on every hole.

The morning 10 holes gave us the insight as to was was in store for the afternoon 18 after we had been ‘fuelled well’ (understatement!) with cheeseburger and chips. I’m sure we all tee’d off for the 18 holes nearly half a stone heavier.

So on to the golf itself and some narrow fairways with huge trees & speedy greens proved a great test of course management & ability. Couple those with the fact that the competition was over the full 28 holes played meant that it really would be the most consistent player who would take 1st prize.

Talking of prizes, there was no less than 15 different winners overall winning a variety of prizes. These are as follows…..

Morning… Chris Copestake, hole 2. Dave ‘BuB’ Brenton, hole 6 & Wayne Jackson, hole 10.

Afternoon…. Ian Dyson, hole 2. Dave Saynor, hole 6, Billy ‘bandit’ Milne, hole 10 & Alan Ashbee, hole 13.

Nearest the pin in 2 on hole 16 was won by Luke Wirrolow with an outstanding approach shot.

Nearest the pin in 3 on holes 9 & 18 were taken by Wayne Jackson and ‘Town fan’ Pete respectively.

It appears the exclusive 2’s club had an almost open invite for a change as 6 players paid a visit. These were Ian Dyson, Dave Saynor, James Pickersgill, Mark Halliday, Alan Ashbee & Chris Copestake.

Before the overall winners are announced I would like to ‘hide’ here the winner of the bucket and spade winner for the most bunkers visited and as it was the same player who won the alcohol free prosecco together with the very handy click counter for most shots played I may as well announce these together in this hidden paragraph. Your welcome Kim Ross!!

So the winners……

5th Place with 56 points, John Kay

4th place with 58 points, Chris Copestake

3rd place with 58 points, Ian Dyson on a count back with Chris, a score of 19 to 15 on the last 9.

2nd place with 59 points, Pete Ferris.

1st place with a super score of 60 points was Alan Ashbee.

Well done Alan, a true consistent performance and well done to everyone who won a prize.

Handicaps….

As the day was played over a combined 28 holes and not the usual 18, Nigel and myself have decided its fair to add or subtract an extra shot for scores outside the buffer zone. So instead of 1 or 2 shot movements on this one occasion it will be an adjustment of 2 or 3 shots. Any complaints should be directed to www.idontgiveadamn.com

Moving swiftly on…..

It’s near the end of our season already and our final outing will be at Shipley Northcliffe on Thursday 8th September. This is a full day of 27 holes at a great course but more importantly it will be, as usual, our AGM at lunchtime and therefore a great turnout is essential. The society is YOUR society and this will be a chance for you to air any concerns, make suggestions or to simply buy me a beer! Seriously, i’ve said it many of time and I say again…… great turnouts make it all worth the organising for me and so please do try turn up to feedback anything at all. I’m always looking to move forward to make it an even better society. I don’t want to fix whats not broken but I also know somethings may need tweaking (not your handicap Dave Saynor!)

Mel Smart Memorial report

The Mel Smart Memorial was played was played for at Wakefield Golf Club on a pretty Muggy Monday!  The lack of rain showed throughout the course however the greens were watered well and ran true. The course was challenging in places with fairly narrow fairways together with well placed bunkers to challenge everyone.

Once we rounded the straggler (JK) out of the toilet (thinking he had time when he saw a crowd on the tee, however they were the society behind us!!!!) and got him back with his playing partners we played the only medal competition of the season which always brings the cream to the top.

Nearest the pins were played for on the three par’3 and these were taken by Paul ‘Killer’ Kilburn on the 2nd hole and Nigel Owram on both the 7th and the 16th.

Nearest in 2 was on the 12th hole and was taken by Roger Worth.

The very exclusive 2’s club was visited by just 1 player who absolutely loves to try get in every time we play, he’s a disappointed chap indeed when said 2’s club isn’t open at all (another society who don’t always play for it) but this time it was and he stormed in. Well done Killer, hope you enjoyed your visit!!!

And so onto the top 3… In third place with a net 70 on a count back was Lee Worth. In second place, a guy with home course advantage was Roger Worth with a very decent score of 69. The winner with great score of 68, 5 under par was Luke Worrilow. Well played Luke, a fine performance.

Shipley Northcliffe G.C. Report

A slightly disappointing 12 of us turned out for the last game of our season at Shipley Northcliffe for the AGM trophy. Thankfully the club were understanding as we had booked for 16 and I’d like to have thank to them placed on record for their hospitality. The course was in great condition however the greens were slow compared to their normal standard.

It was another great day out even if the weather did finally beat us with thunderstorms showing in the afternoon however, as these were forecast we decided to play the 18 hole main competition in the morning and it proved a wise decision as the afternoon barely saw the first 3 ball take their second shots on the first hole before we were all called in & the course was closed.

The morning results saw some great golf played with 3 players under par scoring 36 or better. The average score was a very respectable 32, making it the second highest average of the season.

On to the prizes and the nearest the pins were taken by Lee Weatherill on the 3rd hole, winning the role over from the previous outing at Pontefract. Roger Worth took the prize on the 8th and Alan Ashbee won the 12th hole, who incidentally also took the “role back” as no one got on the 18th green & so we decided to pay it to the previous winner rather than carry £5 over for a full 6 months to the next season.

The Captains prize was played for controversially on the first hole, barely after any warm up but it didn’t stop Dave Jordan, well done Dave on a great start.  The 2’s club turned out to be too exclusive for us all on the day and we were all turned away with Billy Milne, Lee Wetherill and Ian Dyson literally turned away at the opened door!!!

As we only had 12 players we decided to pay out just the top 2. In second place with 38 points was Paul Kilburn. This meant the winner on a great score of 40 was Nigel Owram. Well played Nigel. I will get the trophy to you as soon as possible.

The AGM took place in the afternoon and the minutes are now posted on the website.

THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE TURNED OUT AND SUPPORTED THE SOCIETY THROUGHOUT THIS SEASON. HERE’S TO AN EVEN MORE SUCCESSFUL 2022!!
