Ilkley G.C.

ILKLEY GOLF COURSE IS CLOSED DUE TO SNOW.

The club have kindly agreed to honour our booking at a later date either this year or in March next year.

Due to our fixture list I will be looking at late September if we are to play this year. Watch this space….

Captains Day

Captains day has been finalised and is booked for 22nd August. There is important information with this so please see the events list for details.

I know its just a week between our visit to Wakefield and Hillsborough but this was the best I could do to get all the fixtures to fit our calendar. Hillsborough have offered us and amazing offer and I’m sure we will see a great turn out.

Ilkley G.C. and fixtures

Ilkley is just a week away but I have limited spaces still available.

Please note the Wakefield fixture change and is now 15th August.

I am still trying to sort Hillsborough for Captains Day. They’re a nightmare to get hold of!

2022 season

The 2022 fixtures are now complete. The only snag is trying to get the fixtures at Wakefield for the Mel Smart Trophy and Hillsborough for Captains Day swapped around as Hillsborough have now in formed me that 22nd August is penned in for their greens maintenance week. The dates can be put in diaries however and I will update everyone asap.

Lets make 2022 our biggest and best ever season…..

Shipley Northcliffe G.C. Report

A slightly disappointing 12 of us turned out for the last game of our season at Shipley Northcliffe for the AGM trophy. Thankfully the club were understanding as we had booked for 16 and I’d like to have thank to them placed on record for their hospitality. The course was in great condition however the greens were slow compared to their normal standard.

It was another great day out even if the weather did finally beat us with thunderstorms showing in the afternoon however, as these were forecast we decided to play the 18 hole main competition in the morning and it proved a wise decision as the afternoon barely saw the first 3 ball take their second shots on the first hole before we were all called in & the course was closed.

The morning results saw some great golf played with 3 players under par scoring 36 or better. The average score was a very respectable 32, making it the second highest average of the season.

On to the prizes and the nearest the pins were taken by Lee Weatherill on the 3rd hole, winning the role over from the previous outing at Pontefract. Roger Worth took the prize on the 8th and Alan Ashbee won the 12th hole, who incidentally also took the “role back” as no one got on the 18th green & so we decided to pay it to the previous winner rather than carry £5 over for a full 6 months to the next season.

The Captains prize was played for controversially on the first hole, barely after any warm up but it didn’t stop Dave Jordan, well done Dave on a great start.  The 2’s club turned out to be too exclusive for us all on the day and we were all turned away with Billy Milne, Lee Wetherill and Ian Dyson literally turned away at the opened door!!!

As we only had 12 players we decided to pay out just the top 2. In second place with 38 points was Paul Kilburn. This meant the winner on a great score of 40 was Nigel Owram. Well played Nigel. I will get the trophy to you as soon as possible.

The AGM took place in the afternoon and the minutes are now posted on the website.

THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE TURNED OUT AND SUPPORTED THE SOCIETY THROUGHOUT THIS SEASON. HERE’S TO AN EVEN MORE SUCCESSFUL 2022!!

Fixtures for 2022 will be posted as soon as they are confirmed and so please keep an eye on the website for some new & exciting courses that we have not yet visited.

Low Laithes Report

Eighteen of us attended the Mel Smart Memorial day at Low Laithes G.C. on a warm but overcast day.

As ever i’d like to say thanks to the club for the their hospitality. The course was presented really well & to say the greens were quick is an understatement, I’m sure they were the quickest we have played on in quite a while.

Being Melvins’ competition and to honour his wishes the competition was a full handicap medal competition which always proves a challenge as every shot on every hole counts towards the final result. The average score for the day was 77 which was 5 over par and given the aforementioned speed of the greens I personally think its a very respectable average.

Moving onto the results and firstly I have to mention the captains prize (nearest the pin in 2) which was on hole 11. This was located on advice from the club pro who told me its all down hill and a half decent drive meant it was just a ‘flick’ onto the green……..flick, my @r$e!!!!! The approach was anything but a flick and the actual stopping of the ball near the flag on the front of the green proves almost impossible. Having said this there was a clear winner who managed to get the ball to rest around 30ft from the flag and this was done my Mike Pottock. Well done Mike.

The nearest pins on the 4th & 8th were taken by Billy Milne and James Pickersgill respectively while the 12th proved too tough with no one managing to get the ball to stop on the green. As a result, the prize will be rolled over to the first par 3 in the afternoon at Shipley Northcliffe.

The only 2 of the day was by James Pickersgill who took the whole pot of £18 & The longest Drive was won by Billy Milne who “flicked” a great shot down the fairway on the 18th.

Onto the Main Results and in 3rd place with a great score of 72 was Lee Cooper who narrowly missed out to Ian Dyson in second on a count back. The winner of the Mel Smart Memorial trophy was Lee Worth with an outstanding score of 70, well played Lee!!

Thanks once again to all who turned out to support the society and well done to all who won a prize.

Moving on to our next outing. This will be our final event of the season and will be at Shipley Northcliffe and is full day with the AGM taking place at lunch time. If you have anything you would like to raise at the AGM please let me know via email so I can add it to the agenda and I can also try to find out any answers to give you on the day. I need to know asap if your attending or not and also if you would like to join a few of us for a curry in the evening.

Cheers

Woolley Park Report

An amazing 25 golfers turned out to support Alan on his Captians Day at Woolley Park in weather that could have been better however I think we survived given the forecast.

Firstly a big thanks to the golf club for their warm welcome and amazing hospitality which even stretched to an unexpected drink each from the bar. A super touch welcomed by all. The food as always was also outstanding & I’m certain we will be back next year with another super turnout as the course is always presented well providing a hard challenge.

Talking of challenges, Alan made us work for the prizes he kindly provided, (some of which may have been found at the back of his garage when moving house recently HAHAHA) and had us playing from the white tees which made the course measure almost 6700 yards. Add to this the wind and I’m sure we could add another 2/3 hundred yards in club selections alone.

As if the main course wasn’t hard enough, the par 3 course in the morning was equally as tough in the wind. This was a taster of how the afternoon would pan out.

There were lots of prizes on offer throughout the day which started on the par 3 course with a nearest the pin competition on the 3rd,7th & 9th hole. These were taken by John Kay, Richard Teale & Steve Patrick respectively.

The winner of the par 3 competition was Nigel Owram beating Keith Barnes on the count back. Both scored an impressive 22 points. In third place was Pete Ferris on 20 points. (Rumour has it that he was the 2017 Trilby Tour Champion of Yorkshire but he’s never said!!)

Moving swiftly on to the main event in the afternoon and the super long course which I believe is actually the longest we’ve ever played……

The par 3, nearest the pins were taken by Lee Worth, Pete Ferris & Rob Woodcock. Ian Dyson won the longest drive and nearest in 2 on the 4th hole was Mike Pottock. There was just one person having a visit to the 2’s club and this was the double jabbed Paul Kilburn who therefore was allowed in!! Declaring the most lost balls was Richard Teale with 5 and was presented with a ball retriever from the Captain which will hopefully see him replenish his lost stock over the coming weeks and months.

Onto the main results…..

Wining Mr. Catptian’s first prize, a brand new golf bag, was Billy Milne with an amazing 35 points. Playing of a handicap of just 7, this is an amazing score in the weather conditions previously mentioned. Well done Billy.

In second place was Adrian Hope beating Dave Walkden on a count back. Both Scoring 33 points.

WELL DONE TO ALL WHO WON A PRIZE.

This just leaves me to mention the Handicaps which will be updated asap. I can say the average score was 27 and so the buffer zone was 24-30 and anyone outside this will see a handicap adjustment accordingly.

Our next outing will be Low Laithes on August 26th for the Mel Smart Memorial. The cost of the day will be £26 plus £5 for the sweep. I will be in touch in due course to ask for attendees but for now full details can be found in the events section of this website.

Cheers and Keep smiling……….

Pontefract report

Fifteen of us took to the course at Pontefract on a hot sunny day that saw tans topped up by some while others kept their cool to successfully break par!

The course was in great condition with a few narrow fairways to test the driving accuracy of all. Whilst the greens were not as quick as Howley Hall they were certainly not slow. They did run true and consistent throughout the course.

I’d like to officially say thanks to the club for looking after us and thanks for honouring the same original 2020 price despite an increase for other societies who booked for this year.

Onto the results and to say there were only 2 par 3’s out of the 4 being hit. These were won by Mike Pottock on the 3rd hole and Ian Dyson on the 17th who also paid a visit into the 2’s club. The captains prize on the 9th was also won by Ian Dyson, who with a little consistency throughout may have challenged for the trophy rather than being on the bang average score for the whole group of players. The longest drive was deservedly taken by Lee Wetherill who hit a super shot.

So to the main prizes and in 3rd place with 37 points was Kev Harper. In second was Roger Worth with a cracking 39 point but the winner of the Hickling trophy with an amazing 41 points was Mike Pottock. Well played Mike and well done to the others who won a prize.

The average score was 30 points meaning the buffer zone was 27-33. The handicaps have been updated accordingly with 8 players seeing their handicaps alter after this event.

Onto our next outing which will be Captains Day at Woolley Park G.C. on Thursday 5th August. This is a full day out costing £50 plus £5 for the sweep. Please see the fixtures page on this website for details.

CAN YOU PLEASE ADVISE ME ASAP IF YOUR ATTENDING AS IT’S JUST OVER A WEEK AWAY.

Lets see a great turn out to support Alan in his year’s captaincy. Not forgetting the fact he has just moved house and so there are bound to be some great prizes that he has found in the back of his garage and has dusted off. There maybe even a finest MacGregor driver amongst the top prizes that he has found, ya never know!!!

Howley Hall Report

In true railway fashion….Apologies for the delay and any inconvenience caused!!!!…..

18 players turned out for what proved a tough track around Howley Hall to play for the Webster Cup but wow how nice was it?  The greens were super quick and anyone off the fairway had them in some bother to say the least. This was reflected in the scoring with what is possibly the lowest average score we have ever had.

Despite the low scoring, unbelievably there were 4 trips to the 2’s club with Lee Hepworth having TWO visits whilst Jahn Kay & Ian Dyson had the one trip each!

Lee’s 2’s were also accompanied by him winning 2 nearest pins on the 14th and 18th. Well done Lee. Appears you enjoyed your day. Hope to see you support us again soon.

The other nearest pins were won by John Kay on the 4th & Lee Worth on the 8th.

Longest Drive was taken by Mike Pottock who hit a beauty down the 11th fairway. Mike also won the captains prize (nearest in 2) on the 2nd Hole.

Onto the overall results and in third place with 29 points was Ian Dyson. Second with 32 points was Dan Fenteman and the winner with a great score on the day was Lee Worth with 33 points.

Thanks to all who attended, especially those who turned up for the first time and well done to those who won a prize.

On to the handicaps…. As controversial as they are with people losing shots for finishing over par, it does keep our handicaps fair to all who play within the society and gives everyone a chance of winning in the long term.

The handicaps are updated accordingly on the relevant page.

Finally,

Our next outing will be Hickling Trophy at Pontefract G.C. on the 22nd July. All details are the site and I will send out email for attendance in due course.

Richmond Report

Thursday saw a great turn out of men for the unique combined scoring system for the annual Richmond trophy of which I’m pleased to say has finally been found. I shall not name and shame the holder for fear of mass micky taking……..ok it’s Lee Worth!

A great time was had by all and I’d like to say thanks again to Richmond G.C. for their hospitality on a day that saw some awesome golf and in turn saw some not so awesome golf.

The morning 9 hole stableford was won by Keith Barnes with a great score of 22 points. He pipped Karl Clark who finished in second on a count back but it would be Karl who was to take the last laugh later in the day. Read on to find out…….

The afternoon saw the weather warm nicely and the golf certainly hotted up for the 18 hole medal competition.

In third place with a net score of 70 was Billy Milne, Second was Karl Clarke with 69 and the winner of the afternoon with an unbelievable 67 playing with a handicap of just 5 was James Pickersgill. This meant James’ gross score was just 72 shots which is almost a society record only ever been beaten with a 71 at the Oaks in 2011 by Ian Dyson (yeah come on I had to get that in as I was rubbish yesterday and hey, I’m writing this report!!!!).  In all seriousness well played James sir, a fine round of golf that I’m sure wouldn’t have been out of place on Sky Sports.

The nearest pins were taken by Billy Milne on the 4th & 7th Holes. Steve Patrick on the 12th and Rob Russel on the 9th & 18th. The longest drive was won by Billy Milne.

The 2’s club saw visits from Billy Milne, Rob Russel and James Pickersgill.

And finally the captains prize for nearest in 2 was won by Lee wetherill who it a monster tee shot, almost taking out Keith Barnes who was about to putt on the green!

So back to the Richmond trophy and the winner who had 27 solid holes of golf was Karl Clarke with a combined score 40 points (on the sliding scoring system we use for the trophy).

For the handicaps, the average score in the afternoon was 75 meaning the buffer zone was 72-78. Please see the handicap section the website for the updated handicap list.

Finally I’d like to say welcome back to Robin East who had his first outing after his Hip replacement, Hope you had a good day after the saga with finding you a buggy!

Well done to all who won a prize and thanks to everyone who turned up to support the society it does make the organising worth it to see so many people attend our days out.

Our next meeting is on Friday 18th June at Howley Hall G.C. Details can be found on this website in the events list. This is a rescheduled day from April and as its only 2 weeks away can you please advise me ASAP of your intentions of playing or not.
