Webster Cup @ Horsforth G.C.

18 of us turned out for this years Webster Cup at Horsforth Golf Club on a fine, dry and sunny day.

The course was in great nick with the greens running pretty true after recovering well from the maintenance week 3 weeks ago.

The 2’s club was visited by 2 players, each winning a huge £9 each and these were Karl Clarke & Phil Firth.

Par 3’s were taken by Karl Clarke on the 3rd, Lee Cooper on the 9th, Paul Huddlestone on the 11th & Pete Ferris on the 15th (not a driver i’m told)!

In third place with a score of 34 was Andy Copley, Second was Phil Firth with 35 and this years winner with a cracking score of 39 was Nigel Owram. Well played men.

Apologies but I have a problem with updating the handicaps on the system as they don’t seem to want to save. I will look into it and get it sorted asap but rest assured I know who plays off what so no cheating!!!!!

Our next fixture is at Pontefract & District this coming Thursday and we currently have 19 players so be quick (Monday evening) if you want to play and have not yet paid as I have to give numbers tomorrow morning.

Thats It for now. see you soon!!!

Mel Smart Memorial

17 players took part in this years Mel Smart Memorial that was held at Normanton G.C. We welcomed 3 new players who said they all had a great day and so heres hoping we see them again in the future.

The Mel Smart Memorial is now the only 18 hole medal competition we play which always provides a real challenge of the game. The course was in good condition with the greens running real fast and the green keepers must have been having a laugh with some of the pin positions. The 3rd on the ridge and the 18th, right at the front of a rapidly sloping green been just 2 of them.  The weather was dry for almost all of the play although the wind did blow to add to the challenge for many.

On to the prizes, starting with the nearest pins on the par 3’s. These were taken by Chris Copestake on the 2nd, Paul Price on the 4th, Adam Galloway on the 10th and finally Alan Ashbee on hole 12.

5 players had 2’s which shows some great golf. These players were Billy Milne, Adam Galloway,Nigel Owram, Alan Ashbee & Chris Copestake.

The top 3 players of the day were Dan Fentaman finishing 3rd with a score of 70, including his 1st ever Eagle. 2nd place went to Paul Huddlestone with a super score of 69. Winning this years trophy with an incredible score of 67 was Andy Rothera.

Well done to all who won something.

Thanks to Normanton Golf Club for their warm welcome and kind hospitality and thanks to you for the continued support of the society.

The last 3 fixtures come pretty quickly now and our next outing is now just 10 days away at Horsforth Golf club where we shall play for the Webster cup. The cost for this will be £31 plus £5 for the sweep in cash on the day. For Horsforth Members the cost will be a bacon sarnie and a coffee plus £5 sweep. Please meet at 11 o’clock.  Full details can be found on the events section of this website.

Cheers all…

Happy Swinging.

Richmond Open Report

A new scoring format to the society going by the name of  ‘Medalford’ was used to determine the winner of the 2024 Richmond Trophy where the afternoon 18 hole stableford score was taken away from the morning 9 hole medal score. The lowest score was the one to take the trophy and it provided some interesting scoring with the range going from -2 all the way to +13.

Before the results I would like to officially welcome 2 new players, Adam Galloway & Dean Hurbury. Great to have your support and hope to see you both again throughout the season.
I would also like place on record our thanks to Amy and the whole team at Richmond for providing their first class hospitality and accommodation of the ever changing numbers due to various reasons.

The course itself provided the usual test with the tight fairways and undulating greens. It was in great condition despite all the recent rainfall we have all endured over the last few months.

Onto the results and firstly the 2’s club which saw 4 players taking a share of the spoils. These were Roger Worth, Keith Barnes, Nick McEvoy & Dean Hurbury.
There are 5 par 3’s at Richmond and the nearest the pins were won by the following players…..

Holes 4, 12 AND 18= Roger Worth (greedy!)

Hole 7 = Kev Harper

Hole 9 = Keith Barnes

In 3rd place with  score of -1 (34 medal -35 stableford) was Aidy Hope.

2nd placed on a countback (36 – 34) was Craig Allen (16 stableford countback)

The winner of the Richmond Trophy with an equally impressive score of -2 (36 -34)  was Wayne Jackson with 19 scored on the stableford countback.

full results can be seen on the relevant page of the website.

Well done to those who took a share of the winnings and a huge thanks to all the 23 string field who turned out to play and showed support. Let’s keep these numbers up if possible please.

Due to the rescheduling of fixtures the remaining meetings are in quick succession with the next one being at Normanton for the Mel Smart memorial. This takes place on 19th August with a cost of £33 to be paid into the society account plus £5 sweep on the day.

full details here……

The booking for this event is now open so please confirm by paying as soon as possible.

cheers,

Ian.

Rudding Park Report

After 3 postponed dates, Tuesday 11th June finally saw the start of this years season after the disastrous weather problems and of course the sad passing of Dave Saynor, who a pint was raised in his memory before the prize presentation.

A warm welcome our new members, Alan Johnson, Joe Cooper & Elliot Stocks. Great to have you along and we hope to see you again to our future fixtures.

A strong field of 22 turned out to tackle both the 6 hole Repton course & the 18 hole Hartree course at Rudding Park. The 6 holes were a warm up to zone in the short game which saw plenty of balls swallowed up by the water but a good laugh was had by all.

We then moved on to play for the Hickling Trophy on the 18 Hawtree course which had some long challenges but with wide fairways meant the big dog was used a plenty, however any wide wide shot was punished with knee high rough in many places. The greens didn’t appear too attractive however they did roll pretty quick and there were 2 new holes which I’m sure are temporary while a couple of other holes are being re designed.

The weather just about behaved and although it wasn’t the warmest, it did stay dry for us thankfully.

On to the prizes and the 4 nearest pins on the par 3’s were taken Joe cooper on holes 5 & 8, Lee Worth on hole 11 & Dave Colley on hole 14. Dave also made his 2 on that hole and was the only player in the field to do so meaning he took the whole £22 twos sweep.

In 3rd place on a count back with 35 points (20 on the back 9) was Lee Wetherill. In 2nd place with a great 36 points was James Pickersgill.

The winner of the Hickling Trophy for 2024 with a super score of 38 points was Paul Huddlestone.

The handicaps were reset to the WHS index as per the 3 year agreement made at the 2022 AGM which means there was plenty of movements both up and down after the first event of the year. Please see the relevant results page for the full update.

Onto our next fixture and the one that is fast being proven to be the most popular on the calendar, the Richmond Open. This will take place on Thursday 11th June and full details can be found on the events page. This is a 27 hole competition and a great value day out. Please meet at 0900. The cost will be £51 (including subs) plus £5 on the day for the sweep.

This year we are going to try a new format called “Medalford”. This is where the 9 hole net medal score will be taken from the afternoon stableford score. The player with the LOWEST score will be the winner.

Thanks once again for your continuing support to the society. As said before it really does make the organisation worth it.

2024 Fixtures

All fixtures are now booked for the upcoming 2024 season. Please see events section for the details.

Also the AGM minutes are written up and published please use the search bar in type 2023 AGM.

Handicaps will be updated on the 1st March in line with the 3 year reset.

Northcliffe G.C. Report

For once the weather was almost great for the 15 players who attended Northcliffe to play for the Mel Smart memorial trophy.
Although the numbers were slightly disappointing, a great day was had on a course that was presented in the usual great condition that we have become accustomed to.
To keep with Melvin’s traditions we play a good old fashioned medal style competition which is now the only one played in this format through the season and as usual it did show a true test with only one player breaking par.

On to the winners……
Par 3’ we’re taken by Nigel Owram on hole 4, Josh McMahon on hole 12 & Ian Dyson on Holes 8&18.The captains prize on Hole 1 was won by Paul Kilburn.
The 2’s club saw a first for me with only 2 players involved but bizarrely they both had 2 each and these were Nigel Owram & Ian Dyson.

The main prizes were as follows….

3rd with a score of 74 was James Hardy

2nd scoring 72 was Luke Wirrolow

The winner of the 2023 Mel Smarth memorial with a fine score of 70 was Paul Kilburn.

Well done all!

Our next meeting is the final one of the season and involves the AGM meeting. This will be held at Low Laithes G.C. and all the info can be found, as usual, in the events section of this website. It is 27 holes with breakfast and lunch included at a cost of £50 plus £5 for the sweep. Booking is now open for this event. Please try to attend if possible so we can discuss events moving into the 2024 season.

See you there!!!!

Captains Day at Normanton

A lucky dry & sunny day welcomed us at Normanton G.C. for this years captains day hosted by Mike Pottock.

22 golfers trend up to support  Mike on is day and he made it a success in his meticulous organisation. 9 holes were played in the morning followed by a bacon sandwich before taking to the course in the afternoon for 18 holes on a well presented course with super quick greens. The evening meal was a delicious steak pie with chips which was enjoyed before the prize presentation. Thanks to Normanton G.C. and particularly the kitchen staff for their friendly hospitality.

Plenty of prizes were on offer for both the 9 & 18 holes and so here goes with the winners……

The morning nearest pins were taken by Roger Worth & Steve Patrick on holes 2 & 4 respectively.

The afternoon nearest pins were taken by Aidy Hope on hole 2. No one hit the green on hole 4. Hole 10 was taken by John Kay with Richard Ellis taking hole 12.

Nearest in 2 on hole 4 was won by Dan Fenteman leaving the controversial nearest in 3 on hole 14  or 15 depending which you played was taken by Ian Dyson (hole 14) and Dave Colley on 15!!!!!

The days scoring competition was played for over the full 27 holes and in 4th place with a total score of 53 points was James Hardy. 3rd was won by Lee Weatherill, pipping James on a count back of the afternoon 18, winning 35 to 33.

In 2nd place with a fine score of 57 was Lee Worth.

The winner of the 2023 captains prize and the most consistent golfer of the day with a super combined score of 61 was Dan Fenteman.

Well done Dan and well done to all who won a prize.  Thanks of course to Mike for organising the day and finally thanks to everyone who turned out in support of /mike and the society.

Our next outing is at Shipley Northcliffe to play for the Mel Smart Memorial. this will take place on Tuesday 29th August meeting at 1015 for the usual /bacon sandwich. Full details can be found on the events section of this website.

Pike Hills Report

Friday brought a damp & indeed, a wet visit for the society to Pike Hills Golf Club on the outskirts of York. Although a club once owned by the railways, It is a club we have not visited for a number of years and although the weather was damp and dreary, the welcome from the club was warm and welcoming to say the least.

14 golfers took to the well presented, relatively short course. However, shots didn’t need to be far off the ‘Tiger’ line to see ones ball in trouble with many fairways lined with the dreaded out of bounds or red staked water hazards.

Given the wet conditions the scoring average was a very respectable 31 points and for the first time since we moved to the buffer zone system, the third placed player finished in the said buffer zone meaning he doesn’t lose a shot. True tight scoring round by the field of players. All scores and handicaps will be uploaded in due course but a there will be a delay as I’m away for the next 10 days!!

Moving on to the prizes and i’ll start with mentioning there we no visits to the 2’s club this time round meaning £14 will be carried over to the next event.

The nearest pins, par 3’s……

Hole 7 was won by Kev Harper and from Kev we move to ‘Wev’ (Lee Wetherill) who won the 9th Hole. After that there was just one more par 3, the 15th which was won by Roger Worth.

Captains prize for the nearest in 2 on hole 11 was taken by Wayne Jackson.

The top 3 players…….

In 3rd place with a score of 34 was Mark Halliday. In 2nd  place scoring 36 was Billy Milne and in first place with a super score of 37 points, Winning the Hickling trophy was Roger Worth.

Well played Roger and well done to all who won a prize.

Moving onto the next event which will be our Captains Day taking place at Normanton Golf Club on Thursday 3rd August. The full cost of the day will be £50 & as this is hosted by our captain Mike, I ask that payment is MADE IN CASH ON THE DAY as he is the person who has organised the day.

It would be great to see as many of you as possible to support Mike at his event.

Thats all for now, keep smiling and see swinging!!!!!

Webster Cup Report

After a little controversy about the numbers attending Horsforth G.C. for the Webster cup, we eventually settled at 22 players turning out on fine but breezy day up by Leeds & Bradford Airport.

The day started with a fine & dandy bacon sandwich before we headed out to play 18 holes of Stableford golf. The course was in great condition however there was a whisper that someone had an issue with a bunker or 2. Sound advice was given however from his playing partners who simply said “don’t go in” and I have to say that it is good advice! The greens were not super fast but they did run true, offering good chances to get the ball to the hole. On whole there was positive feedback from all and it could be on the list for a return visit next season.

Onto the important section… The Prizes…..

Nearest the pins were taken by Lee Weatherill on 7, Ian Dyson on 9, Jon Kay on 11 and James Hardy 15.

Nearest in 2 taking the captains prize on the 5th hole was Steve Pattrick.

The 2’s club was visited by Lee Worth & Ian Dyson.

Onto the main trophy and a valiant defence of the trophy by Kim Ross saw I’m finish in 3rd place with a good score of 37.

In second place, beaten on a count back was Ian Dyson on 38 points meaning the winner with a super back 9 score of 21 was James Hardy. Well played James and also everyone else who won a prize.

Our next outing will be at Pike Hills on Friday 14th July and all the details can be found on the events page of this website.

Until our next outing, Keep Swinging!!!!!!!!!

Richmond Report

A healthy 20 players turned out on a fine and dandy, warm & sunny day to play for the Richmond Trophy on a course that was in impeccable condition with the undulating greens causing the usual chaos for some.

The morning started with half a pig in a breadcake, making the bacon sandwich only ever beaten in my experience by Woolley Park but it was a very close run second.  After the pig sandwich we encountered the first 9 holes of medal after it was agreed that playing the Stableford in the afternoon would save both time and face for those like myself who wasn’t exactly straight off the tee!

Lunchtime brought more great food by the way of Pea & Ham soup with a huge selection at sandwiches which went down very well.

The afternoon 18 holes were played in glorious sunshine showing the course in its full glory enhanced by the amazing tree work & the welcome removal of 1 or 2 bunkers around the course. The course really does get better every year and one most will agree has been the best we have played so far this year and maybe the best we will play in a while.

After the 18 holes we sat down for steak pie with chips and peas followed by sticky toffee pudding. It has to be noted that the pie was a huge improvement on last year as was the rest of the days food offerings.

Thanks once again has to be expressed to the club and their staff for the amazing hospitality and I’m sure everyone can’t wait to return next year.

On to the prizes, starting with the nearest pins on the par 3’s….

Holes 4 & 9 were both taken by James Pickersgill. Hole 7 was won by Paul Kilburn. Hole 12 was Aidy Hope & hole 18 was won by Nick Mcevoy. The captains prize for nearest in 2 on the 17th was taken By Lee Wetherill.
There were 2, two’s, taken by Steve Patrick & Rob Russel.

To the main results of the combined scores of both morning and afternoon with points awarded in descending order seeing the winners of each round receiving 20 points down to last place receiving 1.

3rd place with a score of 31 was Kevin Harper (11 & 20 points)

2nd with a score of 35 (20&15)

1st and winning the Richmond Trophy 2023 was Paul Kilburn with consistent scores 19 & 18 equaling 37 points.

Well done to all who won a prize and a big thanks who turned out to make it a fantastic day. Hope to see you all again next year plus a many more who couldn’t make it this year.

Finally on Richmond….. I have had a proposal to make an exciting change to the Richmond competition format. I personally think it’s great idea and one I will share details at this year AGM in September at Low Laithes so make sure your there to cast your vote on the change and other decisions.

Our next outing will be at Horsforth G.C. on Thursday 29th June to play for the Webster cup. The cost will be £30 plus £5 sweep for non members and for members of the club it will be £5 for the sweep, plus the cost of a bacon sarnie! We are to meet at 1030 for an 1130 tee time. I’m now taking payments for this fixture. Full details can be found on the events page of this site.

Thanks as always to all of you for the continued support of the society, it really does put a smile on my face to see the great numbers attending.
