Normanton G.C. Report

A superb 23 players turned out to support the society on a cool blustery day which saw some pretty good  golf in parts. The course was, as always, presented well and coupled with a good stock of supplies at the half way house made for a great day in all. The greens were pretty quick if a little bobbly in places but this didn’t stop Steve Pattrick being the only player to get a 2 on the 2nd hole, netting himself the entire pot of £24.

A warm welcome to the 3 new players, Dave Brenton, Bernard Halkyard & Luke Wirrilow. Thanks for the support guys, hope you had an enjoyable day and hope see you again in the coming fixtures.

On to the prizes for the day and taking the nearest pin prizes were…..

Steve Patrick on hole 2, James Pickersgill on hole 4, Mark Holliday on hole 10 & Lee Weatherill on hole 12, Lee also won the longest drive competition. Taking the captains prize on hole 8 was Roger Worth with a very decent approach indeed!!

In 3rd place with a score of 39 points was Steve Patrick, 2nd place with 40 points was Chris Copestake and the winner of the Keeble Cup with 41 points was Ian Dyson. Well done and in your efforts, as a reward, all 3 of you lose 2 shots from your handicaps!!!

Talking of Handicaps, there are 10 adjustments. 6 players getting shots back & 4 losing shots. these have been updated accordingly on the website.

Onto our next fixture which will be at Crosland Heath G.C. to play for the Samuel Webster Cup. This will be on Tuesday 21st June, We will meet at 0930 with the first tee reserved for 1030. The usual breakfast sandwich will be available. the Cost will be £33 plus £5 sweep. There will be an extra £5 charge to those playing first fixture of the season for the website running costs. Richmond G.C. Report

Wow what a day….. The wind blew hard and wind blew strong. View finders shaking everywhere, Flags almost bent double and the cross wind on the par 5, 6th hole had some approach shots to the green aimed left across the adjacent farmers field to try ensure being on in regulation, a feat that proved too much for a few.

17 of us made the trip up the A1 on a cool, howling but thankfully a dry day. A day that saw some play the elements really well and for others I think the less said the better!! It was decided that we would turn the competition around and play the 9 hole morning round as a medal and the afternoon 18 as a stableford. If not, I’m sure some of us would have run out of balls, the sun would have set and the last group would have had to bring in the chickens for the night!! A great day however with 1 player in particular having a super steady 27 holes to take the 2022 Richmond Trophy. The club, as always, presenting the course well with their unbelievably sloping greens, were great hosts and looked after us all really well. “Thanks Amy and your team for looking after us”. One or 2 mentioned the steak pie wasn’t home made as in previous years and this as been fed back to the club. Having said that, the crumble was super & it was still a fantastic value full day out and one worth the whole day away from home. We will be back next year for sure.

Onto the prizes…..

Nearest the pins were only played for in the afternoon and were taken by the following players….

Hole 4 was taken by Dave Saynor.  Hole 7 was a role over to hole 9 as no one hit the green, this was won by Roger Worth. Hole 12 went to James Pickersgill  & Hole 18 was a fine shot by Nigek Owram.

4 players got a 2 and the £17 pot was shared between Dave Saynor, James Pickersgill, Lee Wetherill & Nigel Owram. As I was out of 25p pieces it was decided to pay them £4 each and roll £1 to the next meeting.

The captains Prize was won by Karl ‘spawny’ Clarke. I didn’t see the hots so I couldn’t possibly comment.

Onto the main prizes and the scoring system of a maximum 17 points (winner) running down to 1 (last place) for both rounds saw Dave Saynor finish in 3rd place with 13 in the morning & 13 in the afternoon, equaling 26 points. In 2nd Place with 12&16 (28 points)  was Paul Killburn. The winner of the trophy with a great performance for the whole day was Chris Copestake with 16 & 17 (33 points) which equals to finishing second in the morning and first in the afternoon. Well played in those conditions Chris!

The full breakdown of scores & points are on the handicaps page of the website for your perusal. It took some working out as there were many count backs to be worked out but I got there in the end.

Handicaps….

These were worked out on the afternoon Stableford competition only as it was too complicated to work out over 27 holes and quite frankly I have other things in life to do too!!haha

Bizarrely, out of the 17 players there are 13 changes to handicaps. 7 played well and have seen a cut with 6 of us not playing so well. (did I mention it was breezy!) The buffer zone was 25-31. Updated handicaps are on the relevant page.

Finally onto our next day out which will be at Normanton G.C. on Friday 27th May. Full details are on the events page. This is just 2 weeks away and I’m now wanting to know who is and who isn’t going?? AS ALWAYS CAN YOU PLEASE LET ME KNOW EITHER WAY……it’s frustrating when liásing with clubs who are requesting final numbers if I don’t get any reply from you.

Thanks all,

Hope to see you at Normanton.

Darrington Report

16 players turned out on a bright breezy day for the Leeds All Sports Trophy (which we still can’t find!) at Darrington Golf Club. I’d like to say welcome and thanks for your support to James Hardy, Kim Ross and Alex Mchale. 3 super guys who I hope enjoyed their first outing with the society.

The course was ok but lacked a growth on the fairways and as a result we witnessed a few mud balls throughout the round. The greens looked fast but played relatively slow with a few bobbles here and there. A dog leg special of a course with no fewer than 12 holes having dog legs one way or another. All in all a good day out and one that is very easy to get to just off the A1.

The scoring average was pretty high at 32 meaning only 3 changes to handicaps which will be adjusted accordingly for the meeting.

Onto the results starting with the nearest pins. these were taken by Mike Pottock on the 5th, Alex Mchale on the 16th and James Hardy on the 18th. James also won the Captains prize nearest in 2 on the 13th.

2 two’s were made on the day by Mike Pottock and Richard Ellis who shared the pot rolled over from the last game of last season.

Onto the top 3 and in 3rd place on a count back with 35 points was Lee Weatherill. 2nd was Richard Ellis with a great 20points on the back 9. The winner with 36 points was Ian Dyson who, after a poor front 9 scoring only 14 points managed not to drop a single shot on the back 9 meaning a score of 22 was achieved.

Well done to all who won something on the day.

16 points max were on offer for the order of merit with 12 players gaining relevant points on a sliding scale. your best 5 rounds will of the season will count towards the order of merit trophy which will be presented at Shipley Northcliffe in September. Scores will be posted on the results page as soon as possible.

Onto the handicaps, Ian Dyson loses a shot and will be playing off 7 next time out. Kim Ross gains a shot and will be 23 and Nigel Owram gains 2 back so will play off 15. All others were in the buffer zone and will remain as they were.

Our next meeting will be at Richmond G.C. on Tuesday 10th May. It is slightly earlier on the calendar this year due to the Queens jubilee in early June. Richmond is one of the highlights to the season and I’m sure we will receive a warm welcome as always. It’s a full day of 27 holes with breakfast, lunch and dinner all included. Full details are in the events section. Please meet at the club by 0930. The total cost including the sweep will be £50 for the day. There will be £5 extra charge to those who will be playing their first game of the season to pay for the running of the website.

I have booked for 20 people and I’m now taking reservations so please advise me as soon as you can whether your playing or not. Please also advise me if you require a buggy.

Thats all for now, hope to see as many as possible at Richmond.

Darrington G.C.

Now taking names for our visit to Darrington. The cost is £40 all in. Please see events list for more details.

Ilkley G.C.

ILKLEY GOLF COURSE IS CLOSED DUE TO SNOW.

The club have kindly agreed to honour our booking at a later date either this year or in March next year.

Due to our fixture list I will be looking at late September if we are to play this year. Watch this space….

Captains Day

Captains day has been finalised and is booked for 22nd August. There is important information with this so please see the events list for details.

I know its just a week between our visit to Wakefield and Hillsborough but this was the best I could do to get all the fixtures to fit our calendar. Hillsborough have offered us and amazing offer and I’m sure we will see a great turn out.

Ilkley G.C. and fixtures

Ilkley is just a week away but I have limited spaces still available.

Please note the Wakefield fixture change and is now 15th August.

I am still trying to sort Hillsborough for Captains Day. They’re a nightmare to get hold of!

2022 season

The 2022 fixtures are now complete. The only snag is trying to get the fixtures at Wakefield for the Mel Smart Trophy and Hillsborough for Captains Day swapped around as Hillsborough have now in formed me that 22nd August is penned in for their greens maintenance week. The dates can be put in diaries however and I will update everyone asap.

Lets make 2022 our biggest and best ever season…..

Low Laithes Report

Eighteen of us attended the Mel Smart Memorial day at Low Laithes G.C. on a warm but overcast day.

As ever i’d like to say thanks to the club for the their hospitality. The course was presented really well & to say the greens were quick is an understatement, I’m sure they were the quickest we have played on in quite a while.

Being Melvins’ competition and to honour his wishes the competition was a full handicap medal competition which always proves a challenge as every shot on every hole counts towards the final result. The average score for the day was 77 which was 5 over par and given the aforementioned speed of the greens I personally think its a very respectable average.

Moving onto the results and firstly I have to mention the captains prize (nearest the pin in 2) which was on hole 11. This was located on advice from the club pro who told me its all down hill and a half decent drive meant it was just a ‘flick’ onto the green……..flick, my @r$e!!!!! The approach was anything but a flick and the actual stopping of the ball near the flag on the front of the green proves almost impossible. Having said this there was a clear winner who managed to get the ball to rest around 30ft from the flag and this was done my Mike Pottock. Well done Mike.

The nearest pins on the 4th & 8th were taken by Billy Milne and James Pickersgill respectively while the 12th proved too tough with no one managing to get the ball to stop on the green. As a result, the prize will be rolled over to the first par 3 in the afternoon at Shipley Northcliffe.

The only 2 of the day was by James Pickersgill who took the whole pot of £18 & The longest Drive was won by Billy Milne who “flicked” a great shot down the fairway on the 18th.

Onto the Main Results and in 3rd place with a great score of 72 was Lee Cooper who narrowly missed out to Ian Dyson in second on a count back. The winner of the Mel Smart Memorial trophy was Lee Worth with an outstanding score of 70, well played Lee!!

Thanks once again to all who turned out to support the society and well done to all who won a prize.

Moving on to our next outing. This will be our final event of the season and will be at Shipley Northcliffe and is full day with the AGM taking place at lunch time. If you have anything you would like to raise at the AGM please let me know via email so I can add it to the agenda and I can also try to find out any answers to give you on the day. I need to know asap if your attending or not and also if you would like to join a few of us for a curry in the evening.

Cheers

Woolley Park Report

An amazing 25 golfers turned out to support Alan on his Captians Day at Woolley Park in weather that could have been better however I think we survived given the forecast.

Firstly a big thanks to the golf club for their warm welcome and amazing hospitality which even stretched to an unexpected drink each from the bar. A super touch welcomed by all. The food as always was also outstanding & I’m certain we will be back next year with another super turnout as the course is always presented well providing a hard challenge.

Talking of challenges, Alan made us work for the prizes he kindly provided, (some of which may have been found at the back of his garage when moving house recently HAHAHA) and had us playing from the white tees which made the course measure almost 6700 yards. Add to this the wind and I’m sure we could add another 2/3 hundred yards in club selections alone.

As if the main course wasn’t hard enough, the par 3 course in the morning was equally as tough in the wind. This was a taster of how the afternoon would pan out.

There were lots of prizes on offer throughout the day which started on the par 3 course with a nearest the pin competition on the 3rd,7th & 9th hole. These were taken by John Kay, Richard Teale & Steve Patrick respectively.

The winner of the par 3 competition was Nigel Owram beating Keith Barnes on the count back. Both scored an impressive 22 points. In third place was Pete Ferris on 20 points. (Rumour has it that he was the 2017 Trilby Tour Champion of Yorkshire but he’s never said!!)

Moving swiftly on to the main event in the afternoon and the super long course which I believe is actually the longest we’ve ever played……

The par 3, nearest the pins were taken by Lee Worth, Pete Ferris & Rob Woodcock. Ian Dyson won the longest drive and nearest in 2 on the 4th hole was Mike Pottock. There was just one person having a visit to the 2’s club and this was the double jabbed Paul Kilburn who therefore was allowed in!! Declaring the most lost balls was Richard Teale with 5 and was presented with a ball retriever from the Captain which will hopefully see him replenish his lost stock over the coming weeks and months.

Onto the main results…..

Wining Mr. Catptian’s first prize, a brand new golf bag, was Billy Milne with an amazing 35 points. Playing of a handicap of just 7, this is an amazing score in the weather conditions previously mentioned. Well done Billy.

In second place was Adrian Hope beating Dave Walkden on a count back. Both Scoring 33 points.

WELL DONE TO ALL WHO WON A PRIZE.

This just leaves me to mention the Handicaps which will be updated asap. I can say the average score was 27 and so the buffer zone was 24-30 and anyone outside this will see a handicap adjustment accordingly.

Our next outing will be Low Laithes on August 26th for the Mel Smart Memorial. The cost of the day will be £26 plus £5 for the sweep. I will be in touch in due course to ask for attendees but for now full details can be found in the events section of this website.

Cheers and Keep smiling……….
