The fixtures for the 2025 season are almost complete and can be found in the events section of this website. I will update the Bingley fixture asap.

I will also update the handicap page in due course.

Low Laithes Report

A quick conclusion to the season was upon us in no time after the re arranged fixtures when 15 players turned out to play Low Laithes for the final meeting of 2024 at Low Laithes to play for the AGM Trophy.

The weather saved its best for the last fixture and it was indeed an absolutely stunning calm & sunny day.

The course was is in great condition in the afternoon after the fairway cutting was completed and the scoring showed with another high average of 33 points.

Onto the final winners of the season and there were just 3 par 3’s which were taken by Nick Mcevoy on Hole 4, Richard Teale on Hole 8 and Nigel Owram on Hole 12. There was also two 2’s and these were Nigel Owram & Richard Teale.  All these were in the last group, some group that. (Just saying! Hahahaha)

The top 3 were in the following order …… On 35 points, taking 3rd on a countback whilst staying in the buffer zone was Lee Wetherill.  In 2nd Place with great score of 38 was Aidy Hope and taking the AGM trophy home with him with an absolute super score of 44 points was Karl Clarke. Well played Karl, it was a pleasure to watch.

The AGM took place at lunchtime and has been published via the link below. There were a few different courses mentioned for next year and so I will get on with it in due course and be in touch once there booked and finalised.

Finally,

I will be conducting an email audit to make sure I have correct emails and also to take off anyone who doesn’t wish to receive emails but this will be done after next seasons golf is booked.

That’s it, thanks once again for all your support, it really does make my time and effort worth it. Have a super winter, Christmas & New year

Happy Swinging !

Pontefract & District G.C.

You know it’s getting towards the end of the season when the elderberries are fully ripened, as we saw at Pontefract on a cool & windy day where 18 of the section turned out to play for the Keeble cup. We also had Arthur Ramsey join us as a guest. Welcome Arthur, hope to see you in the future.

Despite the wind blowing unusually from the East, this showed little concern to the field where the average was the highest we have seen this season at 33 Stableford points.

Before I report on the prizes, I would like to place on record our thanks and appreciation to Malcom & the rest of Pontefract & District golf club who once again offered a warm welcome with a superb bacon sandwich with tomato’s and mushrooms if you desired. They always raise the bar with the hospitality.

So onto the prizes…..

Nearest the pins were won by the following…..

Lee wetherill on the 3rd, Luke Wirrolow on the 7th, Ian Dyson on the 14th & Phil Firth on the 17th.

The 2’s were taken by Phil Firth & James Pickersgill.

For the Keeble cup…..

3rd was James pickersgil with a score of 37.

2nd, also with 37 but taking it on the count back was Phil Firth.

The winner of the 2024 Keeble Cup with an amazing score of 39 was Billy Milne.

Well done all and thanks everyone for your continued support of the society.

Our next and final fixture of the season is the AGM Trophy. This will once again be played at Low Laithes. Booking for this is now open ms can I ask you please pay the full amount of £53 into the society account by Tuesday 10th September. I have to confirm numbers asap as we are having food on completion of the 18 holes. As always at this fixture the AGM will take place after the 9 hole warm up so please bring any ideas or concerns to air on the day!

Finally….

The handicaps on the website have been updated and completed and are now up to date.

Hopefully see you at Low Laithes.

Webster Cup @ Horsforth G.C.

18 of us turned out for this years Webster Cup at Horsforth Golf Club on a fine, dry and sunny day.

The course was in great nick with the greens running pretty true after recovering well from the maintenance week 3 weeks ago.

The 2’s club was visited by 2 players, each winning a huge £9 each and these were Karl Clarke & Phil Firth.

Par 3’s were taken by Karl Clarke on the 3rd, Lee Cooper on the 9th, Paul Huddlestone on the 11th & Pete Ferris on the 15th (not a driver i’m told)!

In third place with a score of 34 was Andy Copley, Second was Phil Firth with 35 and this years winner with a cracking score of 39 was Nigel Owram. Well played men.

Apologies but I have a problem with updating the handicaps on the system as they don’t seem to want to save. I will look into it and get it sorted asap but rest assured I know who plays off what so no cheating!!!!!

Our next fixture is at Pontefract & District this coming Thursday and we currently have 19 players so be quick (Monday evening) if you want to play and have not yet paid as I have to give numbers tomorrow morning.

Thats It for now. see you soon!!!

Mel Smart Memorial

17 players took part in this years Mel Smart Memorial that was held at Normanton G.C. We welcomed 3 new players who said they all had a great day and so heres hoping we see them again in the future.

The Mel Smart Memorial is now the only 18 hole medal competition we play which always provides a real challenge of the game. The course was in good condition with the greens running real fast and the green keepers must have been having a laugh with some of the pin positions. The 3rd on the ridge and the 18th, right at the front of a rapidly sloping green been just 2 of them.  The weather was dry for almost all of the play although the wind did blow to add to the challenge for many.

On to the prizes, starting with the nearest pins on the par 3’s. These were taken by Chris Copestake on the 2nd, Paul Price on the 4th, Adam Galloway on the 10th and finally Alan Ashbee on hole 12.

5 players had 2’s which shows some great golf. These players were Billy Milne, Adam Galloway,Nigel Owram, Alan Ashbee & Chris Copestake.

The top 3 players of the day were Dan Fentaman finishing 3rd with a score of 70, including his 1st ever Eagle. 2nd place went to Paul Huddlestone with a super score of 69. Winning this years trophy with an incredible score of 67 was Andy Rothera.

Well done to all who won something.

Thanks to Normanton Golf Club for their warm welcome and kind hospitality and thanks to you for the continued support of the society.

The last 3 fixtures come pretty quickly now and our next outing is now just 10 days away at Horsforth Golf club where we shall play for the Webster cup. The cost for this will be £31 plus £5 for the sweep in cash on the day. For Horsforth Members the cost will be a bacon sarnie and a coffee plus £5 sweep. Please meet at 11 o’clock.  Full details can be found on the events section of this website.

Cheers all…

Happy Swinging.

Richmond Open Report

A new scoring format to the society going by the name of  ‘Medalford’ was used to determine the winner of the 2024 Richmond Trophy where the afternoon 18 hole stableford score was taken away from the morning 9 hole medal score. The lowest score was the one to take the trophy and it provided some interesting scoring with the range going from -2 all the way to +13.

Before the results I would like to officially welcome 2 new players, Adam Galloway & Dean Hurbury. Great to have your support and hope to see you both again throughout the season.
I would also like place on record our thanks to Amy and the whole team at Richmond for providing their first class hospitality and accommodation of the ever changing numbers due to various reasons.

The course itself provided the usual test with the tight fairways and undulating greens. It was in great condition despite all the recent rainfall we have all endured over the last few months.

Onto the results and firstly the 2’s club which saw 4 players taking a share of the spoils. These were Roger Worth, Keith Barnes, Nick McEvoy & Dean Hurbury.
There are 5 par 3’s at Richmond and the nearest the pins were won by the following players…..

Holes 4, 12 AND 18= Roger Worth (greedy!)

Hole 7 = Kev Harper

Hole 9 = Keith Barnes

In 3rd place with  score of -1 (34 medal -35 stableford) was Aidy Hope.

2nd placed on a countback (36 – 34) was Craig Allen (16 stableford countback)

The winner of the Richmond Trophy with an equally impressive score of -2 (36 -34)  was Wayne Jackson with 19 scored on the stableford countback.

full results can be seen on the relevant page of the website.

Well done to those who took a share of the winnings and a huge thanks to all the 23 string field who turned out to play and showed support. Let’s keep these numbers up if possible please.

Due to the rescheduling of fixtures the remaining meetings are in quick succession with the next one being at Normanton for the Mel Smart memorial. This takes place on 19th August with a cost of £33 to be paid into the society account plus £5 sweep on the day.

full details here……

The booking for this event is now open so please confirm by paying as soon as possible.

cheers,

Ian.

Rudding Park Report

After 3 postponed dates, Tuesday 11th June finally saw the start of this years season after the disastrous weather problems and of course the sad passing of Dave Saynor, who a pint was raised in his memory before the prize presentation.

A warm welcome our new members, Alan Johnson, Joe Cooper & Elliot Stocks. Great to have you along and we hope to see you again to our future fixtures.

A strong field of 22 turned out to tackle both the 6 hole Repton course & the 18 hole Hartree course at Rudding Park. The 6 holes were a warm up to zone in the short game which saw plenty of balls swallowed up by the water but a good laugh was had by all.

We then moved on to play for the Hickling Trophy on the 18 Hawtree course which had some long challenges but with wide fairways meant the big dog was used a plenty, however any wide wide shot was punished with knee high rough in many places. The greens didn’t appear too attractive however they did roll pretty quick and there were 2 new holes which I’m sure are temporary while a couple of other holes are being re designed.

The weather just about behaved and although it wasn’t the warmest, it did stay dry for us thankfully.

On to the prizes and the 4 nearest pins on the par 3’s were taken Joe cooper on holes 5 & 8, Lee Worth on hole 11 & Dave Colley on hole 14. Dave also made his 2 on that hole and was the only player in the field to do so meaning he took the whole £22 twos sweep.

In 3rd place on a count back with 35 points (20 on the back 9) was Lee Wetherill. In 2nd place with a great 36 points was James Pickersgill.

The winner of the Hickling Trophy for 2024 with a super score of 38 points was Paul Huddlestone.

The handicaps were reset to the WHS index as per the 3 year agreement made at the 2022 AGM which means there was plenty of movements both up and down after the first event of the year. Please see the relevant results page for the full update.

Onto our next fixture and the one that is fast being proven to be the most popular on the calendar, the Richmond Open. This will take place on Thursday 11th June and full details can be found on the events page. This is a 27 hole competition and a great value day out. Please meet at 0900. The cost will be £51 (including subs) plus £5 on the day for the sweep.

This year we are going to try a new format called “Medalford”. This is where the 9 hole net medal score will be taken from the afternoon stableford score. The player with the LOWEST score will be the winner.

Thanks once again for your continuing support to the society. As said before it really does make the organisation worth it.
